Strengthening resilience through clean water and community leadership

The community of Nhagutua has reached a significant milestone in its path toward resilience with the completion of a solar-powered water supply system, providing safe and continuous access to drinking water. The system composed of a 5,000-litre tank, a metal tower, a solar submersible pump, and photovoltaic panels ensures an autonomous and sustainable operation even under increasingly harsh climatic conditions.

Funded by the Swedish Embassy through the Triple Resilience (3R) Programme and implemented in partnership with IFDC, this initiative goes beyond infrastructure. It empowers the people of Nhagutua to manage their own water resources effectively and sustainably.

A Water Management Committee, formed entirely by community members, was created to oversee the system. With the technical and practical training provided by the Cheringoma District Planning and Infrastructure Service, the committee is now responsible for the preservation and maintenance of the borehole. This training reinforces the active role of local populations in ensuring that the water system continues to serve Nhagutua’s families efficiently and for the long term.

This achievement is also a direct response to the impacts of the El Niño phenomenon, which has worsened droughts, water scarcity, and food insecurity across the region. Nhagutua was prioritized for intervention due to its vulnerability and because it hosts the Technology Transfer Centre (CTT) a strategic hub for agricultural production supported by the project.

Through this effort, Nhagutua is not only securing clean water but also building community autonomy, climate resilience, and hope for a sustainable future.
