In January, the 3R (Triple Resilience) project took another concrete step towards strengthening the climate, economic and social resilience of the rural communities of Muanza and Cheringoma. In collaboration with the IFDC (International Fertilizer Development Center) and with funding from the Swedish Embassy, community nurseries were set up in the 9 Technology Transformation Centres (CTTs), with the initial production of 500 seedlings per centre, covering fruit and timber species and nitrogen-fixing plants such as moringa and gliricidia.
This initiative is an essential part of the agroforestry strategy of the project and the LevasFlor Foundation, which promotes the integration of trees and agricultural crops as a way of regenerating soils, diversifying sources of income and strengthening food security through more resilient agricultural systems.
The communities involved are receiving practical training and technical support to ensure the quality of the seedlings and the success of the plantations. The aim goes beyond environmental conservation: it is also to improve livelihoods by creating a more sustainable, diversified and productive rural economy.
By cultivating species with commercial potential and nutritional value, the CTTs create new opportunities for income generation and access to food, especially for young people and women. The seedlings will be distributed to small farmers in the region, encouraging the adoption of more sustainable agricultural practices that are resistant to climate change.
